I am keeping the text short for this one.
Climbing a hill with my son, Thomas is always special. Driving 1h 45 minutes for a three and a half hour hill is really the limit of what I would drive for a short day but within a period of showery weather, we stayed dry and the walking conditions were close to perfect.
The way up was steep and I am less fit than ever! Thomas waited for me. He commented on how I attracted the flies as there were loads of them buzzing around my head. I think it was just that I was sweating harder. I had started with a lightweight waterproof jacket in the hope of providing extra protection from the ticks as we made our way up the bracken. The bracken reminded me of the Whomping willow as it seemed to grab my legs and walking poles in an attempt to drag me back down the hill.
Once above the bracken, it was a delightful walk to the summit. Thomas had prepared the rolls and I have to say it was the best Leicester cheese and ham roll I have ever tasted.
It is always good to vary things and have different routes of ascent and descent, but the descent route was far for enjoyable right down to the lower meadow beneath the crags. I was a little surprised on reaching the road as I thought it was going to be a little further. The route took 3 ours and 35 minutes but that included a lunch stop at the summit and several photography stops. Needless to say, it could be done a lot quicker!
