8 October 2025 - Olle 5

Picture
It was the Chuseok holiday (harvest festival/thanksgiving) and I had a week off work. I worked for the first few days of the holiday, with the weather looking to be more settled from the Wednesday onwards. I had a two night - three day hike planned but ended up adding on a day as I was really enjoying the walks. In fact I find that I am enjoying the walks more the second time around!

The last picture in the gallery is called Lion Rock as it looks like the head of a large cat.
For me, the walks are about photography as much as the walking. This is Graphium sarpedon, the common bluebottle. I find that these never settle for long and I find it difficult getting close to them. This one settled on the rocks of a stream.

This was my first time seeing a live snake on Jeju. Harmless Japanese Keelback (Hebius vibakari).

About 4km into the walk, I came across a harbour with low walls with the waves washing over it. Watching people swimming and having fun and me feeling so hot, the temptation was too much and I walked out to the end and dived off one of the mooring bollards.

The lemonade on Jeju is blue because it's flavored and colored with blue ingredients, such as a blue raspberry syrup.
The last time, I took the bridge as it appealed and it led to me taking some nice photographs of a heron. I think that many Olle walkers do so. The actual route goes around the harbour, maybe to try to give the local shops some business. I went the long way round this time - but the bridge route is better.

9 October 2025 - Olle 6

Picture
I had done about 4 km of Olle six the previous day in the charming company of a girl from China. I stayed at the Dodam Dodam Pension, which had a cafe that served food up until about 7PM, depending on how the owner felt. A short way ahead was a surfing bar to have a nice cold beer.
1. Ligia exotica
2. Argiope bruennichi, commonly known as the wasp spider
3 Unknown species of shore crab - I believe there are several different species on Jeju.
I paid the entrance fee and dropped down the steps to the base of the Sojeongbang Waterfall. Note the basalt rocks in the first photograph. The spider is a kind of jumping spider, but I do not know the species.
It is then a short distance into the city of Seogwipo and the Olle Centre.

On my way to the hotel, I popped into the Seogwipo Olle Market where the most interesting aspect is the street food.

10 October 2025 - Olle 7

Picture
This was my third time of walking Olle 7 and I probably enjoyed this occasion the most. The first time was way too hot and I struggled up Sammae Peak in the humidity and heat. This time, it was also hot and sunny, but the conditions were more variable.

The pictures include:
Cheonjiyeon waterfall.
Park Golf is a new type of golf that started in 1983 in a small town in Japan.
Oedolgae.Pelopidas mathias, the dark small-branded swift, small branded swift, lesser millet skipper or black branded swift,
This was where the trip was meant to end but I booked into a nearby hotel.

11 October 2025 - Olle 7-1

Picture
This has to be one of my favourite trails. I was photographing the toro spider when it suddenly moved. I did not know that they could move so fast. Breakfast had arrived in the form of a small moth.
The route passes the Eongtto Mokpo (waterfall), but I have not seen any water on either of my visits. It is perhaps a place to return to in really wet weather. The small (honesty) cafe has a TV screen showing water gushing over it. Jeju, being a volcanic island means that the water drains over the volcanic rocks relatively quickly so things quickly dry up.
apilio xuthus, the Asian swallowtail, Chinese yellow swallowtail, Japanese Swallowtail, Korean Swallowtail or Xuthus swallowtail.
1. Eurema hecabe, the common grass yellow (or I think it is).
2. Ochna serrulata, commonly known as the Mickey Mouse plant, carnival ochna, or bird's eye bush.
3. The Indian fritillary (Argynnis hyperbius) on a large pair of fixed binoculars.
The vases, geological features and statues are in a garden. The route passes the rear entrance. I have taken a look on both occasions, working on the basis that it would be blocked off or at least have a gate if they do not want people to enter. There is a small refreshments place outside the house but I have never seen anyone manning it. I am happy to pay if I can find somebody to pay. Maybe there is an honesty box at the main entrance?
Bongnim-sa Temple
Hanon crater rise fields - This is the only place I have seen rice growing on Jeju.
I was pretty confident that I had passed the 100km mark. In fact I had done so at the end of Olle 6, even without including Olle 3B.At the end of 7-1, my total was 136.1km, so definitely ready for my 100km certificate!
