Olle 11

19 January 2025

This was one morning that I really should have stayed in bed! The plan was to cycle to the end of the trail, as it is not very very far away from where I am living on Jeju. I thought that it would save me a few Won!

I tried to find a reasonably direct route through to the finishing point, but did a u-turn not realising that the trail was just a short walk across an uncultivated field. I could have then followed the Olle to the end, though this is discouraged. On arriving at finish, I realised that I had forgot my Olle passport, so took a taxi home to pick it up. While home, I put down my wallet and on my way to the start of the route, I realised that I did not have my wallet and had to ask the taxi driver to do a u-turn to take me back to pick it up before heading out to the start.

All this meant that it was 11:30 by the time that I set off. I did make good progress and was not at risk of finishing in the dark.

Then I went over on my ankle in the Sinpyeong Gotjawal Forest, with the sound of crunching gristle. At first I thought that I would have difficulty continuing, though I did not really have much choice, as I had seen few other people on the route. I was able to walk it off, though it was very sore and at one point it "went" again. I could feel the tendons moving over the bone on the outside of the ankle. Thinking about it afterwards, perhaps this re-aligned things as, if anything, it seemed a little better.

I still completed the route in 4 hours 15 minutes which is well within the 5-6 hours given on the website.
